Debt assistance is a very straightforward and closely regulated process. First, the consumer’s finances are analysed to determine whether they qualify and will benefit from a debt review. Next, the consumer’s budget is adjusted, with funds divided between living expenses and debts. Then, taking into consideration how much the consumer can afford to spend on debt payments, the counsellor will renegotiate the payment terms with the creditors owed by the consumer and make them aware that the consumer is under debt review and therefore protected from legal action. Payment commences and continues until the consumer has paid off all their debts.
